How can we get kids outside more often?

Every year, the Outdoor Industry Association publishes an in-depth Outdoor Recreation Participation Report that breaks down the where’s, how’s, who’s and what’s of outdoor play in America. In recent years, the report has placed considerable focus on youth participation in outdoor activity. As you can see in the chart below, 2010 was the first time in 4 years where the number of kids who spent time climbing, hiking, camping, running, and biking outdoor sports did not decline.

The message is clear, we need to do more to get young people interested in the outdoors. According to the OIA research, the #1 reason why kids under 17 are motivated to get outside is because “outdoor activities are cool.” Anyone who’s ever climbed a mountain will quickly agree. Now we just need to spread that message to kids who’ve never climbed a mountain before. It’s a big job and at Eastern Mountain Sports, we’d like to do our part. The infographic below provides some facts and figures about mountain climbing that we hope kids under 18 will find interesting (dare we say “cool”).

Please share it with anyone you know and tell us what else we can do to encourage kids to get out more often.

Jim's love for the outdoors began with family camping trips in "Brady Bunch" style canvas tents and progressed to backpacking adventures with the Boy Scouts. In 2007, he fulfilled his teenage dream by joining Eastern Mountain Sports as Brand Communications Manager. When he's not in the office, you'll find Jim kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking around the Monadnock Region and throughout New England with his wife Brenda and his dog Brewski.
