Accelerated Mountaineering

This is one of our most popular winter programs, and a solid foundation for anyone headed to Mt. Rainier, Denali, or similar objectives. This course will have a mix of “classroom” and outdoor time. On day one we will discuss individual experience and goals and how we will tailor this course for your specific group. We will then have a discussion on equipment and clothing for mountaineering. Part of this will involve how to better pack our backpacks for climbing and how to decide what we need to bring. The afternoon will be spent outside where we will go over the basics of ice axe and crampon use as well as self arresting. Day 2 will again be a mixture of classroom and outdoor time. Our classroom time will be focused on selecting objectives (mountains!!) to climb and how to go about climbing them. Outside we will cover traveling as a rope team while touching on glacier travel techniques. During day 2 we will, as a team, choose a mountaineering objective for day 3.

mw-680x475As a combination of the educational and the experiential, this course is tough to beat and you’ll come away from it with a comprehensive understanding of what serious winter mountaineering is all about.

IMPORTANT: 1) Weather and conditions may inhibit us from covering all topics outlined in this course. Please be open to a flexible schedule. 2) Groups classes require a minimum enrollment of two people. If you are booking alone for a group class your reservation is subject to change if minimum enrollment is not reached. Group classes are perfect for those with flexible schedules. Any class can be booked privately any day of the week. Private reservations are guaranteed to run. For information about private reservations please call 845-668-2030.

Groups meet on the first two days promptly at 8:30am at the Eastern Mountain Sports in Lake Placid.  On day three groups meet at 7am at EMS for summit day.  Click here for directions.  Each morning you will meet your guide and get outfitted with climbing gear for the day.  Once everyone is outfitted, groups will leave straight for the trailhead.  The whole day will be spent outside so please dress appropriately for the weather.  You should also bring enough food and water for the entire day and a backpack to carry items to the cliff.  Each day will end around 4:30pm back at EMS.

Included/Not Included

Climbers will be outfitted with all technical equipment for the day.  You are welcome to bring your own gear, but it will be subject to a safety inspection by your guide.  Equipment provided includes mountaineering boots, crampons, mountaineering axe, ice tools, harness, helmet, and climbing hardware.  Climbers will be expected to arrive dressed appropriately for the weather and provide their own water, lunches, and snacks for the day.  See our gear lists for a complete list of items you will be responsible for bringing.  Meals, lodging, and transportation are not included.
