Directions to the Gunks

The New Paltz (Gunks) Climbing School is located just outside the Mohonk Preserve, about 7 miles west of the village of New Paltz. Car travel is the preferred method of transportation to the Gunks, but daily bus service is available from New York City.

From New York City take 87 north to exit 18 (NY-299) towards New York/ Poughkeepsie. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for NY-299 west. Turn left onto NY-299 west/ Main Street. Continue to follow NY-299 west through the village of New Paltz for about 7.5 miles until you reach route 44 & 55 (“T” intersection). The Climbing School is located across the street at the intersection of NY-299 and route 44/55.

Bus Transportation

Trailways of New York runs daily bus service between New York City and New Paltz. Drive time from NYC to New Platz is approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes. The bus station in New Paltz is about a 10-minute taxi drive to the EMS Climbing School. If you don’t have a car, this is a good option. / 800-776-7548

Take the earliest bus (7am) from NYC. This will get you to New Paltz at 8:30am.

How do I get to the Climbing School from New Paltz?
Taxis are stationed at the bus station in New Paltz. Take a taxi to the EMS Climbing School (they should know where it is). If you would like to call in advance, call 845-255-1550 (New Paltz Taxi, Inc).

Will I get to the Climbing School by 8:30am? What if I’m late?
You may be a little late, but that’s okay. The bus usually arrives in New Paltz at 8:30am. If you are traveling by bus please let the Climbing School know ahead of time so they can plan for your arrival.
